My sculptures bring attention to the interactions between people and machines that shape modern living, highlighting how mechanization has become an invisible part of our existence. Through plywood, electrical components, and construction hardware, I create objects that seek to draw attention to these overlooked interactions and the ways in which mechanical devices quietly shape our experience.
This current body of work uses electric light to express absurdist humor. While each piece is a functional lamp, powering the lamp requires a bizarre interaction with the sculpture. The performance required to turn on the bulb lets the audience in on the joke. This playful engagement rewards the audience while challenging conventional ideas of functionality and our reliance on everyday objects.
I draw on my experience designing and building fine furniture to transform functional objects into playful hybrid sculptures. I use materials that echo industrial fabrication while exposing hardware and maker marks to distinguish them from traditional craftsmanship. This deliberate reveal mimics the appliances we take for granted while reminding us of the human-made origins of machines. Through humor and engagement, these sculptures challenge expectations and invite deeper reflection on how devices impact our daily lives.
