Growing up in a first-generation family, confronting assimilation while maintaining my own cultural identity has fostered the creation of MODA LIBRE. A return to indigenous wisdom reimagining high fashion by infusing it with the soulful essence of Mexican culture, intergenerational connection, and a strong sense of family. I come from a lineage of seamstresses going back to my great-grandmother, who would make rebozos (traditional shawls). The garments embrace generational traditions of resilience and resourcefulness by taking pieces from everyday life. Each project is shaped by items that have served as a byproduct of survival within my family and culture.

MODA LIBRE advocates for the reclamation of culture and space through imagination and vision while understanding the intimate links between land and labor, exuding an unapologetic pride in our roots. The garments undertake an endeavor to shed light on the beauty of Milwaukee’s Southside by capturing the work in neighborhoods, weaving a tapestry of memories and beauty. Using materials bought from local family businesses, objects commonly found in Mexican homes, like mercado bags or a kitchen apron, provides a moment of rediscovery and preservation. Sharing the work with the community threads the memories of life, reminiscing about shared experiences, traditions, and memories with our loved ones while strengthening family bonds and promoting a sense of belonging.

With a profound focus on healing and uplifting the community, fashion fulfills a functional purpose to help individuals become self-sufficient and monetarily independent. From high school students to adults, MODA LIBRE creates opportunities for people to learn sewing basics, needlework, and machine sewing, but also gain a greater understanding of how these skills translate towards a path of entrepreneurship and income through their creativity. MODA LIBRE connects individuals to community and opportunity, provides space for healing, and the chance for families to flourish.
